If you'd asked her yesterday morning, Jo would have said that she'd reached a point where Fandom couldn't surprise her any more.

Then her dad had shown up, and suggested she and Edmund go to dinner with him.

Mom had never mentioned he was so good at interrogations.

Well, it had been abandon Edmund or try and explain the handcuffs. She'd picked the lesser of two evils. "He wouldn't actually have done anything...I think."

He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. "I could have handled him if he had, but having to even think of combating your father isn't a position I'd ever like to be in."

"Well, it's not like I was ever expecting it to come up."

"Neither was I, but you could have not run off!"

"And you could have not handcuffed yourself to the bed!"

"That was an accident!"

"And suppose asking him to help was too?"

"I called for help and he happened to be walking by. Mine was an incident of unfortunate circumstance. You chose to walk out!"

"You could have asked his name!"

"Yes, because I ask every stranger his name when he's trying to help me. And eventually he did tell me, but there are thousands of Bills in the world."

"You didn't think strange adults showing up in the dorms was an 'ask full name' type situation?"

"I thought he was a teacher I hadn't met and I was just grateful that he wasn't someone with a camera."

"We'd have been better off if he was!"

Not that Jo was ungrateful for the chance to see her dad again...just not in situations involving Edmund and handcuffs.

"I know that now. At the time all I wanted was to get out of the handcuffs. Where did you end up putting them after your hasty departure?"

"They're in the bottom drawer. Along with the key."

"I had a key. Something took it."

"That's why you keep a spare."

"You had the spare." No, he didn't even know what they were arguing about now, but it didn't matter. They were arguing and it had been 24 hours in the making.

Jo didn't really know why they were arguing either, but it felt like something they should be doing. "Why did you even have them in the first place?"

"You left them here and I thought I would see how they worked properly."

"By handcuffing yourself to the bed?"

"There wasn't a lot else to try handcuffing myself to. I wanted to see how they held up, but I didn't realise the key was out of reach."

Don't giggle at Edmund, Jo, you're in the middle of having a fight.

Edmund looked at her incredulously. "I'm trying to be mad at you and you're laughing?" It was not at all easy to keep being mad when someone was giggling at you.

"Sorry." She sounded terribly sorry too, what with the continued giggling.
